Farm Feature Friday: Harris Bros. Cattle Company of Coffee County, Tennessee

Q&A by TCA Spring Intern, Abagayle Morton

This week’s Farm Feature Friday takes a look at Steve Harris and his operation, Harris Bros. Cattle Co., of Coffee County. Steve is a long time cattle producer, raising Herefords in the past and now currently producing Black Angus. Steve’s answers to the Farm Feature Q & A can be found below.

How long has your family been involved in raising cattle? Tell us about how it got started.

My family has been raising cattle all of my life and I am 54 years old. When I was growing up, we raised Hereford cattle and I showed Hereford heifers and steers in 4-H.

Tell us about your farm today (breed of cattle, what are you proud of, etc.)

Today, I raise Registered Angus cattle. I try to raise quality Angus bulls to sell to commercial cattlemen in the area to help them become more profitable.

What was your favorite part about growing up on the farm?

I enjoyed growing up on a farm and living on the farm with 2 wonderful parents and the 2 best big brothers anyone could ask for. I enjoyed spending time working on the farm and taking care of the cattle.

What have been some of the trials you or your family has had to overcome?

My brother Mike, who is our Veterinarian in the family had a severe stroke 5 years ago. It has been a challenging, but he is doing well today and we are surviving and thriving at times in the cattle business.

What is one thing you wish more people knew about life on the farm?

The character youth gain from growing up on a farm from taking care of animals and doing farm chores.

What does it mean to you to be able to work with your family every day?

It is very enjoyable to work with your family in operating a farm business.

Do you have any advice for young Tennessee cattle producers about the business?

I believe that you need to enjoy taking care of and raising cattle to be successful in the cattle business. I order to be successful, young producers need to learn to be good at selecting quality cattle, keep them healthy and giving them proper nutrition.

What's your favorite beef dish?

Meatloaf or Filet Steak!

Is there anything else you can share with us?

Take care of your cattle! Make friends in the cattle business! Get involved in your local cattlemen’s association and have fun!
